2009 Read-a-Thon Book Selections

October 16, 2009

A few days ago, I signed up for Dewey’s 24-hour Read-a-Thon, which is on October 24th, 2009.  See my previous post on the read-a-thon for more information. Here are the books that made it onto my reading list.

Take a look, and let me know what you think.

1. Tess of the d’Urbervilles, Introduction and notes by David Galef: I chose this book because I’m reading it for a Victorian literature class that I am taking. It looks like it will be good. I guess Masterpiece Classic made a movie out of it. Check out the movie clip on their site. Have you seen the movie or read the book? Was it good?

2. Dragon House: This has been on my list to read for a while. I’m actually on chapter three. I just need to finish reading it and get a review up. So far, I’m enjoying it.

3. Time of My Life: A Novel: I can’t wait to read this book. I follow Allison on Twitter, and subscribe to her blog. She always seems to be up to something interesting.

4. A Circle of Souls: This is another book that has been on my list for a while. Hoping to get a review up soon.

5. The Postmistress: I’m reading this as part of the Barnes & Noble First Look book club.

6. That Old Cape Magic: I have never read Richard Russo’s books, but I have heard many great things. I can’t wait to read this book.

7. Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide: Check out my recent post called For Women Who Hold up Half The Sky

So, that is it for me. I likely won’t get them all read, but at least I’ll have a good selection. Have you read any these books? Are you participating in the read-a-thon?  What are you reading?

Hey Sharla,
Read Tess of D’Urbervilles as a teenager. Remember being moved to tears. Wonder if it would still have the same effect. Sounds like a great list you’ve got there. Dragon House – is that the book by John Shors, set in Vietnam? I’ve been wanting to read that. Have posted my Top 50 Book list. Would be curious to know what you think. Cheers!

I haven’t read any of these but I hope they’re good reads. I have a huge pile for the read-a-thon. Good luck and happy reading. I’ll be cheering you on.

Karen- I’m glad to hear that you liked Tess. I’ll let you know what I think when I’m done reading it. I’ll probably write a review too. Note to self: It may be a tear jerker. Thanks for letting me know. Yes, Dragon House is the book by John Shors.

Vasilly- Thanks! It’s so nice to hear from others who will be participating.

I’m not a fan of Tess, but I think I’m in the minority. I love Russo, but I haven’t read the new one yet. Good luck and have fun!

Haven’t read Tess, but REALLY not a fan of Hardy. Far From the Madding Crowd, anyone? Gag. Not enough characters died.

LOVED LOVED LOVED Circle of Souls!!!

I second, LOVED LOVED LOVED Circle of Souls!!!

Beth- Thanks! Glad to hear about Russo. I’m really looking forward to reading his books. He just gave a reading in my area last week, and I missed it. Oh well. Hopefully, he will be back.

Britt & Katrina- Oh good. I’m glad it’s on my read-a-thon list then. I really wasn’t too sure about it.

Thanks so much for your comments everyone!

I’m definitely adding some of these to my to-read list. Thanks for the good recommendations. I hope you have a great time!

I like Hardy and read Tess a long time ago. Watched the movie, too. It was a beautifully made, heart wrenching movie–if it is the same movie we are talking about.

Tess is what turned me on to Hardy. While I’m not as avid a Hardy-reader as I was, I still like his books.

I like the way Russo writes. I’ve read two of his books…Empire Falls was my favorite!

Thanks for the comments! I’m glad to hear some good things about Hardy. Seems like I get a lot of mixed responses. The movie clip of Tess looked really good. I just added it to my Netflix queue. I have to watch Trumbo first, then Tess.

Ronnica- I haven’t read Empire Falls yet, but I’m adding to my list.
