Wondrous Words Wednesday

February 10, 2010

wondrous2This week, I finished reading A Balcony Over the Fakihani by Liyana Badr. While reading, I came across quite a few words that I didn’t know.

It’s not too surprising because most of them are actually Arabic. I thought they were interesting though, so I wanted to share.

Do you know any of these words?

Mulukhiya- Also called Jews Mallow, Mulukhiya are leaves from the jute plant used in Middle and Far-East cuisine.

It’s spelled a bit differently here, but DirtyKitchenSecrets has a fantastic post showing the leaves being used in a recipe.

Nargila- Also called a hookah, this is a water pipe used to smoke tobacco. Wikipedia has some excellent info & pictures if you’re interested.

Yamma- Palastinian-Arabic word for mother.
